I Heard It Through the Grapevine was written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong for Motown Records in 1966. The most famous version was recorded by Marvin Gaye in 1968. The song addresses rumors of infidelity in the singers relationship and its emotional impact. Initially, Whitfield wanted to record the song with Marvin Gaye, but Gayes version was initially rejected, later released, and achieved great success.
