It Is Well with My Soul was written by Horatio Spafford following a series of tragedies in his life, including the death of his daughter and a maritime disaster that claimed the lives of his four daughters. The musician Philip Bliss eventually composed the melody for the lyrics, which was named Ville du Havre, after the ship on which Spaffords daughters died.
