The Scientist by Coldplay was written after lead singer Chris Martin was inspired to write a simple song in the key of G major, following the example of George Harrisons hit Isnt It a Pity. During the writing process, Martin wanted a song that was direct, that was without pretense. The song describes the desire to fix a broken relationship.
