Noche de Paz fue compuesta en 1818 por Franz Xaver Gruber con letra de Joseph Mohr en el pequeño pueblo de Oberndorf bei Salzburg, Austria. Se interpretó por primera vez en la Nochebuena en la Iglesia de San Nicolás. La creación de la canción ocurrió casi accidentalmente, después de descubrir que el órgano de la iglesia estaba roto, necesitando una música que se pudiera tocar con guitarra.
